Purpose, Scope & Dimension of Job: Faculty facilitate student learning and initiate and participate in efforts to consistently improve the level of student success. As learning facilitators, faculty consistently assess learning outcomes and their own teaching effectiveness (pedagogy). As professionals, faculty adhere to the ethical standards of their profession as outlined, for example, by the NEA and the State of Michigan. Where applicable, faculty maintain licensure and certifications. In addition, faculty have the following key responsibilities which are described more fully below in the Essential Duties/Major Accountabilities section:

Specific Teaching Assignment:
Faculty member will be responsible for teaching lecture, laboratory or clinical courses in the dental assisting program, adhering to the stated course objectives, content and delivery, as part of the approved program curriculum.
Minimum Requirements
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
1. Bachelor’s Degree or transcript of coursework documenting solid progress toward attaining Bachelor’s degree in Allied Health Education or related area from an accredited institution.
2. Current Michigan licensure as a Registered Dental Assistant (R.D.A.) or Dentist with Doctor of Dental Surgery or Medical Dentistry (D.D.S./D.M.D.) credential.
3. RDA must be a currently Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) through Dental Assisting National Board (DANB) certification.
4. At least three years of full time recent, relevant dental assisting clinic experience, and with occupational experience in the application of four-handed dentistry principles.
5. This position is in a program that receives funding from the Perkins grant; therefore, incumbents must provide proof of current license and certification and maintain their licensure and certification as a condition of employment
6. Possess clinical knowledge of the specific subjects to be taught, including background in educational methodology.
7. Evidence of continuing professional development.
8. Understanding of and commitment to community college teaching, mission and philosophy.
9. Innovative, flexible and positive teaching style and understanding the needs of students from diverse backgrounds.
10. Language Skills: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
11. Mathematical Skills: Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations. Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference.
12. Reasoning Ability: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.
13. Technology Skills: Ability to integrate computer applications into teaching.
14. Other Skills and Abilities: Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional program; ability to plan and implement lessons based on division and college objectives and the needs and abilities of students to whom assigned. Ability to establish and maintain collegial relationships with students, peers, staff, and administrators; skill in oral and written communication.

Additional Desirable Qualifications
Additional Preferred Qualifications:
1. Master’s degree in Allied Health Education or related area from an accredited institution.
2. Teaching experience at community college level.
3. Familiarity with use of computer-based instruction, distance learning, learning technologies, competency-based instruction and modularized courseware.

Unique Aspects of Job:
1. Fast-paced environment interacting with multi-cultural students with varied educational backgrounds.
2. For clinical requirements, incumbents must keep their health records updated, which includes required immunizations and annual TB testing, as well as CPR/BCLS certifications.
Physical Requirements/Working Conditions
1. The employee must be able to move about 2/3 of the time and be stationary about 1/3 of the time. S/he is required to be mobile around campus for participant involvement/activities.
2. S/he must be able to converse with individuals on a regular basis with the ability to read, analyze, and interpret their needs via phone conversation, face-to-face conversations, and written documentation.
3. The employee must be able to utilize all programs on computer independently and efficiently (particularly the internet, Word, and student database).
4. S/he must be able to present information in an instructional setting and respond to questions from groups.
5. Must be able to tolerate frequent exposure to a wide variety of chemicals which are common to the dental industry. Must be able to handle and mix compounds or chemicals properly and safely and to wear appropriate latex, vinyl or latex-free gloves and other personal protective equipment.
Work Schedule
Faculty are required to maintain office hours and will make additional provisions for student consultations as may be necessary and reasonable.
